PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana — Explained

A plain-language guide to the central rooftop solar subsidy — what it is, who qualifies, how much you get, and how Solar Raiders handles the paperwork for you.

What is it

Free electricity, funded by the central government

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme that gives eligible households Central Financial Assistance (CFA) toward the cost of a rooftop solar system — plus the ability to earn up to 300 units of free electricity a month by generating your own power and exporting the surplus back to the grid.

The subsidy is credited directly to the customer's bank account after installation and net-meter commissioning — it isn't a discount applied by the installer.

Eligibility and the application process

This is the general framework of the scheme — your exact eligibility depends on your DISCOM, roof type and existing connection, which we check for you during the free site survey.

Who is eligible

An Indian resident with a valid electricity connection and a rooftop suitable for solar panels, without an existing rooftop solar subsidy already availed on the same connection.

Registration

Apply through the official PM Surya Ghar portal or your DISCOM, using your electricity consumer number.

Technical feasibility

Your DISCOM reviews the application and approves the feasible system size for your connection.

Installation

An empanelled installer — like Solar Raiders — installs a DCR-compliant system sized to your approved capacity.

Net meter & commissioning

The DISCOM installs a net meter and inspects the system before it goes live.

Subsidy payout

Once commissioning is confirmed, the subsidy is credited directly to your registered bank account.

Frequently asked

Subsidy questions, answered

Who is eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

Indian residents with a valid electricity connection and a suitable rooftop, who haven't already availed a rooftop solar subsidy on that same connection.

How much subsidy can I get?

Commonly published rates are Rs.30,000/kW for the first 2kW and Rs.18,000/kW for the next 1kW, capping at Rs.78,000 for systems of 3kW and above. Always verify current figures on the official portal, as government schemes can revise these amounts.

How do I apply?

Through the official PM Surya Ghar portal or your DISCOM. Solar Raiders handles this entire registration and follow-up on your behalf as part of every installation.

What documents are required?

Typically a recent electricity bill, identity proof, bank account details for the subsidy credit, and roof ownership proof where the DISCOM requires it.

How does net metering work?

A net meter records both the power you draw from the grid and the surplus power you export back to it. Your bill reflects the difference — this is what makes "free" units possible in months your system generates more than you use.

How does Solar Raiders help with the subsidy?

We handle the full application — portal registration, documentation, DISCOM coordination, installation, and net-meter commissioning — so the subsidy reaches your bank account without you having to chase paperwork.
